Chief Academic Officer of HD Schools Welcome Message
Welcome to HD Qingdao Wanda School, a new dual curriculum, bilingual school in Beijing bringing together the best of Chinese and British education. HD Qingdao Wanda School is greatly influenced by Hurtwood House UK which has an outstanding academic and creative record and is recognised as one of England’s most successful and exciting schools, putting the vigour and enthusiasm back into education. HD Qingdao Wanda School is putting the “fun” back into education. Starting school and going to school should be fun, a place that students want to go. They should look forward to each new day with excitement and enthusiasm. With our passionate and inspiring staff HD Qingdao Wanda School will do just that.

With small classes we will be able to personalise education for each child. Teachers and Principals will get to know each child as an individual, their wants and needs, and above all they will develop a warm relationship with each child so they feel safe and cared for by all at the school.

Becoming bilingual is no easy task but one that I am committed to and very experienced in. HD Qingdao Wanda School will create an environment where students are immersed in each language and taught by qualified, native speakers of English or Chinese. Students will learn, apply and practice both languages and develop excellent language skills.

It is a great privilege to take children at a very young age as they begin school and I have a wealth of experience in nurturing young lives and seeing them develop and grow. I am always humbled by the dedication and hard work of teachers as they strive to develop each child academically and emotionally. As Headmaster I am committed to taking an active part in this.

School is not all about academics however, and this is reflected in HD Qingdao Wanda School’s motto: Education creates character. Developing and nurturing student’s character is a great responsibility for all schools and HD Qingdao Wanda School takes this very seriously. Through pastoral and moral education students will develop empathy for others, responsibility for their own actions and the resilience to overcome life’s challenges.

Please take some time to read through this website and to visit our school. My door is always open with a warm welcome waiting for prospective and current parents.

Mr. Warren Johnston
Chief Academic Officer of HD Schools

Chairman Welcome Message
Why am I establishing a school? The most important reason is: I am a father. I hope my own children will enjoy rich and meaningful lives but, in the current social circumstances, how can they become good citizens?

Education creates character. It is a person’s character that determines how much they can accomplish. During the early years of primary school, the most important thing for children should not be the skills they learn but the cultivation of their characters. Our school’s values are Faith, Hope and Love, to which we aspire in our teaching aims. We hope our students will conceive a clear goal for their lives, and cultivate tenacity of character in following it. Of course, an ambitious goal combined with tenacity will not make a decent and responsible person. In fact, someone displaying these attributes is not necessarily as they appear, but may be unfeeling or irrational. Love is the ameliorating precondition.

Children need dreams. At the very beginning, a child may or may not have conceived their life goal and so parents usually take on the role of setting aims for their child, perhaps hoping that child will develop into the adult they themselves did not have chance to be. However, we believe that children should find their own paths through life, no matter how difficult that may turn out to be. They need to learn to endure, to be patient, to be persistent and filled with hope throughout.

Education should not focus solely on academic success. The evaluation of a child should not rest solely on grades. Every student’s educational requirements are unique and, for this reason, we will individualise education through small classes and particular attention to every single student’s wants and needs in a warm, caring learning environment.

We might not be able to create a utopia through the establishment of a school, but surely we will be able to influence families, and so affect the next generation. The purpose of establishing this first school is not just about imparting knowledge or skills but educating people and the pursuit of truth. We are cultivating the Chinese culture within an international environment, hoping our students will be influenced by this bilingual, bicultural environment we have created and not be overwhelmed, but become confident in themselves, and feel proud of their achievements. They will learn to love, and to willingly demonstrate that love. They will live happy and rich lives and develop their characters to the best of their potential.
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never ends.

Qingdao Welcome Message
Dear Parents,

I was delighted when the Chairman of the Elite Group, Mr Tao Sun, invited me to come an be part of one the great educational journeys of the 21st century!

The opening of HD Qingdao presents the families of this historic, vibrant and growing city with a rare opportunity : the chance to develop, on a superbly equipped and brand new campus, next generation Chinese citizens who not only have a profound respect for their own culture and language, but who are also bilingual and internationally minded. We will work together with parents, pupils and teachers to achieve this vision in a number of ways.

Firstly HD’s unique dual language, dual immersion curriculum, pioneered by Chinese and international experts, will guide our pupils through the challenging road to bilingualism in a way that pays careful respect to the foundations of Mandarin, Moral Education, English, Mathematics and Science, but also encourages pupils to think creatively and independently as they prepare for university and all that lies beyond. Above all, our teachers will make the experience of learning fun and dynamic, so that pupils want to come to HD and learn!

Teachers are carefully selected from prestigious Chinese and international academic backgrounds and trained both to inspire pupils in the classroom and to get to know each of them individually so that each child feels nurtured and cared for. Small class sizes and a strong focus on direct and personal communication with each family are key features of the HD way.

Education must also be fun and enriching outside the classroom and it is a central part of the HD journey that all our pupils develop interests that will last them a lifetime through their pursuit of extra-curricular activities, whether these be sport, art, music, design or the wider range of opportunities that our purpose-built campus offers. Our teachers will communicate their own passions to guide your sons and daughters on this journey.

Our wonderful site and programme offer first-class opportunities for both day and boarding students. The day pupils benefit from the emphasis on wholeness that is at the core of the HD way. The boarding programme enables students to grow within an extended family supervised by professional staff who are dedicated to your children’s welfare. By being part of this family boarders develop both their own personality and lasting friendships within an atmosphere that is at once structured yet personal. Growing together as boarders enables children to learn about each others’ strengths and weaknesses and to make the compromises necessary for successful personal relationships in adult life. But above all it is great fun!

We are greatly assisted in our educational journey by our close relationship with Hurtwood House, one of the UK’s most prestigious schools and one whose creative, imaginative and pioneering philosophy permeates what we do at all levels : the Hurtwood team make

regular visits to us here in China and are instrumental in helping us to select the best staff from the UK and worldwide.

We are all determined here at HD Qingdao to ensure that our school motto, ‘Education creates character’ translates into effective action : we teach our students that maturity lies not in the seeking of privilege but in the acceptance of responsibility, and that true individuality lies in developing one’s own gifts to the benefit of the community.

Above all HD Qingdao stands for two things : standards and warmth. We cordially invite you to come and visit us to see these for yourselves!
